Maasai Food Relief --
Hunger Relief Funds at Work in Kenya

Because of the drought conditions Kenya is experiencing, many rural Kenyans are facing starvation.

Men_load_trucks_for_food_distribution_projectIMB missionary Bob Calvert is heading up a massive feeding project among the thousands of starving Maasai in drought ridden rural areas of Kenya.

In order to get the food stuffs transported out to the far reaches of Maasailand, Bob has set up a staging area at Kajiado Baptist Church located one and a half hours outside of Nairobi.

Today, I along with fellow missionary colleagues am headed to Kajiado to help in the moving of foodstuff.

As we drive southeast out of the city, the landscape becomes drier. The lush green grass of Nairobi turns to green-tinged grass cropped short by the grazing of cattle, goats, and sheep.  Approaching Kajiado town itself, the only hint of green we find is in the shallow valleys and culverts where what little moisture there is collects. We are told that from here on out there has been no rain and the earth is hard and dry.

Worship_service_at_Kajiado_Baptist_ChurchDriving up to the church building, we hear singing, worship has begun. We worship first, and then we work. The small congregation of Kajiado Baptist Church is made up mostly of women and children, thus the call for help was extended to fellow missionaries. Men from the churches where this food is to go have also come to help, as the job needs to be done quickly.

After worship and the customary circle and greetings outside, the church grouds transforms into a flurry of activity. Trucks back up end to end for the transfer of maize meal from the store delivery trucks to the trucks that will drive out further into the bush with the precious food stuffs. Boxes filled with containers of fat are carried from the church to a designated area to be counted before they are loaded onto the top of the maize meal. Other store delivery trucks drive up to the church to off load their goods into the church for storage for the next week as this will all happen again.

Men_meet_to_plan_logistics_of_food_distributionThe logistics of a large food project can be overwhelming. Food orders, delivery orders, willing hands and grateful hearts all go into a successful project.

As we stand and watch the heavily loaded trucks trundle slowly down the dirt track, we are tired but pleased at all that was done today.

Pray for protection of the drivers and their precious cargo as they travel to their destinations. Ask God to multiply the food, as He did in days of old, to feed those who are in need. Pray that those receiving food will recognize the love of Christ and their need to know Him as Savior and Lord.
