By Jessie Yates
I have been here and there,
I have visited the four corners of this world,
I know all there is to be known,
Yet something is still not there.
I have learned all the languages,
From Latin to slang,
I have seen all the sights,
From the Sphinx to the New York Yankees,
I have traveled the world,
From Rome to the Green Acre Woods,
Yet something is still not there.
I attain wisdom with a command,
I have the world at my touch,
The world's dreams in my clutch.
Nothing has passed by me,
Nothing can escape my mind,
I have the knowledge,
The strength to accomplish it all,
I cannot fail,
Yet something is still not there.
Maybe if I plan that day,
That day next millennium,
More precisely,
Fill it to its fill,
And do the same with the next day,
I will have it all.
But I feel all the more empty.
I have been here and there,
I have visited the four corners of this world,
I know all there is to be known,
Except for life.
So tomorrow I will start to my days as they come,
I will still fill my life to its fill,
But without the plans,
Without the emptiness,
And then the only thing that is not there,
Is what I will have yet to accomplish.
