Presently, in the harsh economy and the politically charged climate being experienced in Zimbabwe, it is difficult for Baptists to find ways to help the local people who are in the midst of a terrible drought that is quickly becoming a famine situation.
As missionaries we are aware of what our counterparts are doing in the area of food relief in other countries of our region; but that is not a possibility here in Zimbabwe. However in God's timing, there is a seed project in the works for Gokwe in the central part of Zimbabwe.
Some of our Harare MKs wanted to be involved in this project in whatever way they could. They decided that they would get up early on Tuesday morning while they were on school break and help load the trucks with the maize seed that would be given out for people to plant for this next year's harvest.
At 7:00 in the morning these mks and a couple of dads arrived at the building where the maize seed was being stored, to wait for the trucks that they were to load.
There were several other men who also came to lend a helping hand, and before long the first truck was loaded with the 50 kg sacks of maize seed. They loaded 231 sacks weighing 50 kg each in record time!
Loading the second truck was easy compared with the loading of the first one because the load was lighter. The sacks they loaded in the second truck weighed only 24 kg each. And there was only 117 of them too!
These mks are helping people whom they do not know and who they will never meet.
As these maize seeds are distributed in Gokwe this week, the Word of God will also be distributed. These maize seeds hold a promise of a maize crop next year. The seeds of the gospel hold a promise of eternal life now, an immediate harvest for the Glory of God.
Pray for good rains this season in the Southern Africa Region. Pray also that the seeds of the Gospel will reap a tremendously rich eternal harvest.
